Benno Spieker teaches music pedagogy and digital didactics at the conservatory of ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Enschede. After graduating from the HAN Hogeschool in Arnhem as a Civil Engineer and having worked in that field for some time, he graduated in 2003 from the conservatory of ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem with a bachelor’s degree in Music in Schools. He taught music at a secondary school from 2002 to 2009 when he started as a teacher of music pedagogy at the teacher training college in Doetinchem. In 2015 Benno graduated cum laude from the master Musicology at Utrecht University, for which he collaborated with the IPEM research group of Ghent University (Belgium). Benno is currently combining teaching at ArtEZ with doing a joint PhD at IPEM and at the HMI research group of the University of Twente in Enschede. To this end, he is working on interactive technology to support student teachers in guiding students to play music together. Benno provides an annual seminar at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and is an advisor, project manager, and coordinator ‘subject integration’ at the Dutch foundation More music in the classroom, which promotes music education in Dutch primary schools on a national scale. Between 2016 and 2020 he was a board member of the national network of music teachers at teacher academies. Since 2017, he is a board member of the Dutch music teacher association. Finally, to maintain a healthy connection with the music practice, Benno occasionally plays drums/percussion with Dutch soprano singer Laura Engel and singer/flutist Esther Pelgrom. For both, he also writes songs.
