Learning Outcomes for Music Teacher Education in Europe

Looking back

Back in 2006, it was the COMENIUS 3-Project meNet (Music Education Network – European Network for Communication and Knowledge Management in the Field of Music Education, concluded 2009) that took the first initiative to establish and publish Learning Outcomes in Music Teacher Training on a European level. After this project, EAS developed as well Learning Outcomes Generalists & Specialists, published in 2013 in Vol.2 of the EAS Book Series (Hennessy, S., Malmberg, I., Niermann, F, & de Vugt, A.: meNet and EAS Learning Outcomes. Music Teachter Training for Specialists and Generalists. In: De Vugt & Malmberg (Eds): European Perspectives on Music Education 2: Artistry. Innsbruck 2013, p. 259-281). Both sets of Learning Outcomes were understood as a contribution to the debate on the question of how to teach music in school, and which competencies future music teachers and generalists should possess.

Learning Outcomes for MTE 2.0 – NEW from 2026

About two decades later, a further effort has been made in advocating for music education and proposing a contemporary European reference framework: As part of the EU-funded project TEAM (Teacher Education Academy for Music, Future-Making, Mobility and Networking in Europe, 2023-26), a new set of Learning Outcomes for Music Teacher Education in Europe has been developed, for both generalist and specialist classroom music teachers in primary and secondary education.
