Music in Schools

Music is taught as a school subject in Finnish schools. During the comprehensive school years (Grades 1-9), music is studied altogether for 8 hours a week (45 minute lessons). During the last three years of comprehensive school (Grades 7-9), there are in total two lessons of music as a compulsory subject, and in addition to that pupils can choose extra courses of music as a voluntary subject. Music Teacher Training

In Finland, all the teachers in comprehensive school and high school have a master´s degree in teaching. During the lower classes of comprehensive school (Grades 1-6), music can be taught by class teachers, who have often specialized in music during their studies. Read more…
