Music Teacher Training (FI)

In Finland, all the teachers in comprehensive school and high school have a master´s degree in teaching. During the lower classes of comprehensive school (Grades 1-6), music can be taught by class teachers, who have often specialized in music during their studies. Class teachers can also study music as a secondary subject, in which case the teacher is qualified to teach music also for the upper classes of comprehensive school (Grades 7-9). Special music teachers are trained in three universities: in Helsinki, Oulu and Jyväskylä. These special music teachers are qualified to teach also in high schools.

The emphasis of Finnish music education is to give positive experiences with music. During music lessons, pupils make music together by playing instruments and singing. Common knowledge and basic facts of music are also in the curriculum. During the last years, technology has become an important part of music lessons.
